Cypriot weaving

One of my favourite places that I visited in Cyprus was the small village of Fyti, a traditional weaving village that still produces a wide variety of woven textiles with traditional patterns from the local region. It is a much more fulfilling experience to browse/purchase goods from a 'working shop'. Being able to watch these talented women at work adds greater value to the work being displayed.
By learning and understanding the processes involved in making these goods, we are able to appreciate the quality of the craftmanship first hand and to celebrate the high level of skill and knowledge that nowadays fewer and fewer people possess.

We were shown a range of textiles woven in Fyti over the last century and to me there was a clear distinction in appeal between those woven with natural dyed cottons and the more recent man made colours. Despite the beautiful patterns and incredible skill involved in the more recent textiles, I was drawn to the more delicate colour pallets of the older textiles and this led me into researching traditional dying methods which I will share in my next post.... hold tight!
